Cosmetic Filling

Instead of cosmetic fillings, many of us get traditional silver-colored fillings as we’re growing up, be it for cavities or deep grooves in our molars. These days there are alternatives to these noticeable appliances. There are now natural-looking materials made from porcelain and composite resins that are colored to match natural tooth enamel. Though they cannot match the strength and durability of amalgam and may need more frequent replacement, they blend with your natural teeth and are barely noticeable. For alternative cosmetic fillings in Marietta, call our office for more information.

There are a number of alternatives to silver-colored amalgam. The following are some of the most common:

Composite Fillings – These fillings consist of a mixture of resins and particles that mimic the color of natural teeth. Due to their smooth texture, these filings are often cemented or bonded to teeth for optimal adhesion. Again, they are not quite as strong or as long-lasting as dental amalgam.

Ionomers – These materials are also tooth-colored and are made from various materials. Glass and acrylic resins may be used for these fillings, as Ionomers are generally used near the gum line or tooth root where biting pressure is not a problem. While they are significantly more fragile than dental amalgam, a small amount of fluoride is released to help strengthen enamel.

Porcelain – Normally porcelain fillings are a combination of porcelain, glass powder, and ceramic, and are most commonly used for crowns, veneers, onlays, and inlays. These fillings are not as strong as dental amalgam, but they are stronger than Ionomers.
