What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Nitrous Oxide dentistry is more than the anesthesia commonly given for pain control. Sometimes known as sleep dentistry patients with high anxiety often need some form of additional sedation. It refers to the extra calming of a patient before and during an appointment. It can be broad and general sedation such as an intravenous (IV) injection, or minimal such as inhaled sedation gas or Nitrous Oxide. Oral sedation such as Valium is taken at about 1 hour before the appointment.

How Much Does Sedation Dentistry Cost?

Sedation dentistry cost ranges from $50.00 for inhaled gas to $250 for oral sedation. Insurance does not usually cover the cost.

Oral Sedation Dentistry vs. IV Sedation Dentistry

Oral is much less intrusive than intravenous IV sedation dentistry. Special training is needed before a dentist can offer IV sedation and that must be renewed every two years. Most dentists can provide inhaled or oral sedation. Generally, with oral sedation such as Valium, the purpose is just to calm the patient. IV sedation is used in more intense situations than just calming.

Pediatric Sedation Dentistry

Most children can complete most dental procedures using local anesthesia; however, some that are fearful, uncooperative or very young must be insulated from the stress and discomfort. If you suspect your child may need sedation dentistry, please advise the staff when making the appointment.

Sedation Dentistry Side Effects

Inhaled gas is the only additional sedation that does not have immediate side effects which prohibit driving after the visit. IV and Valium must have a driver stay with the patients from the time the patient arrives for the appointment and take the patient home immediately after the treatment. Again, the driver must remain during the entire appointment. A driver is not needed with standard anesthesia.
