A root canal may sound scary, but in reality it is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling for a cavity. Thanks to local anesthesia, cutting-edge technology, and modern dental techniques, root canal treatment is virtually painless.

Eliminates the Need for Extraction

Root canal treatment

By removing the infected pulp, a root canal procedure lets the healthy exterior of your tooth remain in your smile. The remaining tooth structure can be restored with a dental crown, if necessary.

Help Avoid Critical Oral Health Issues

A dental infection not only causes pain, but can affect adjacent teeth and gum tissue if not promptly addressed. If the state of the infected tooth is too weak to justify a root canal or if it is too far gone, the only option left is tooth extraction.

Root Canals Can Save and Repair an Infected Tooth

At Verde Pointe Dental Associates, root canal therapy is one of our most highly reviewed treatments. We use antimicrobial FiteBac technology during root canal treatment to effectively eliminate infection. Root canal therapy can relieve pain and save your tooth.

Common Root Canal Symptoms to Look out for

Our team has more than three decades of root canal experience. If you are experiencing symptoms, contact Verde Pointe Dental Associates in Marietta, GA, immediately. These include:

  • Toothache
  • Sudden, lingering sensitivity to heat and cold
  • Swelling in your gums or face
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Sudden but persistent bad taste in your mouth

If you are suffering from any of these symptoms, over-the-counter anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen may help ease the pain until you can see a dentist.

Endodontic treatment can save infected teeth by removing the diseased pulp with a root canal. The only alternative dental procedure to endodontics is extraction.

However, an extraction without further restorations such, as a dental implant, will eventually result in bone atrophy. A root canal can help you avoid such complex and costly procedures.

Do I Need an Endodontist  for a Root Canal?

No. Though an endodontist specializes in treatments like root canals, our dentists have extensive experience in this procedure. They are all too familiar with issues caused by infections spreading to the inner chamber of the tooth. Only rarely do we refer out to a local endodontist. Our team can treat teeth like premolars, molars, anterior teeth, and even dead teeth. We also offer retreatment.

Infection of the pulp leads to constant pain and increased sensitivity. In severe cases, the infected pulp can lead to an abscess. That is why it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible if you suspect you are in need of a root canal.

If you require treatment, the dentists at Verde Pointe Dental Associates in Marietta, GA, remove the diseased pulp, halt the spread of infection, and restore the healthy portion of the tooth. An endodontist may need to send you to a dentist for a crown and follow-up care, but our dentists can handle treatment from start to finish.

What Factors Impact Root Canal Cost?

Dental insurance will often cover at least a portion of this medically necessary procedure. The price of a root canal can vary. Cost depends on the type of tooth, extent of damage, if any preparation is needed, and the type of restoration, as well as:

Number of Roots

Front teeth only have one root, so they cost less to treat. Molars can have as many as three. The more roots a tooth has, the more treatment it will require. Therefore, a decayed molar will cost more than a front tooth.

Anesthesia and X-rays

Our dentist will first assess the extent of the required treatment with an X-ray. This necessary step adds to the overall cost. Right before your root canal begins, one of our dentists will provide local anesthesia to dull the nerves for a virtually painless procedure. If you choose to receive sedation, it will have a separate cost.

Follow-Up Oral Care

After your root canal, you may need to see the dentists at Verde Pointe Dental Associates for follow-up visits, such as for a dental crown or a filling. The earlier you seek treatment, the less expensive the follow-up care typically is.

How Does Root Canal Therapy Work?

When infection progresses into the pulp, it can affect the root and further compromise the structure of the tooth. During a root canal, the infected soft tissue inside a tooth is removed to eliminate the source of infection. After the roots are filled, the tooth can be sealed with a filling or protected with a crown.

How Root Canal Therapy Goes From Start to Finish

A root canal procedure may sound scary, but in reality it is no more uncomfortable than receiving a filling for a cavity. Here's what we do to treat and protect your tooth in the midst of a root canal infection:
Need care ASAP? We have a walk-in dentist to help. Our team also offers emergency care for adult and pediatric cases, which we may even be able to provide outside of our regular hours.

Consultation and Planning

During your consultation, you will undergo a full exam at our Marietta, GA, dental office. Consulting X-rays and 3D CBCT imaging, we can determine if root canal therapy is the right option or if extraction is a better option. We will also go over the entire root canal process so you understand what to expect.

Administering Anesthetic

Local anesthetic will make the root canal as pain-free as possible. Sedation is also available to help calm any nerves. When the tooth is numb, a dental dam is placed to keep the treatment area sterile and free from saliva.

Accessing the Pulp Chamber

To access the diseased pulp, a small opening is created in the crown of the tooth. In addition to taking digital apex locator measurements, we use tools like computer controlled handpieces and magnification to make this process as precise as possible.

Removing the Infected Pulp

The diseased pulp is carefully and thoroughly removed from the pulp chamber. The nerves and blood vessels within the pulp chamber are also removed.

Draining the Abscess

In addition to removing the pulp, nerves, and blood vessels, a root canal may also involve treatment of a dental abscess if one is present. The abscess is punctured and the pus is allowed to drain out.

Sterilizing the Root Canals

With infected pulp gone and the dental abscess drained, the pulp chamber is thoroughly sterilized. This is done to remove all unwanted bacteria and ensure that the infected tissues are safe.

Filling the Root Canals

With all the pulp removed, the next step is filling the root canals with warm gutta percha obturation. We close it with MTA, a biologically compatible sealer, to protect the inside of your tooth.

Capping the Treated Tooth

At the end of a root canal, a dental crown is placed on top of the tooth to protect the pulp chamber from harm and restore the ability to bite, chew, and speak. We feature same-day crowns, so you don't have to return for a repeat visit.

What to Expect After Root Canal Treatment

After the anesthetic from your root canal wears off, you may experience some tenderness for a few days. You may also have a sore jaw, due to your mouth being open during treatment. An over-the-counter inflammatory of your choice can help provide relief.

Commonly Asked Questions About Root Canal Therapy

What is the difference between root canals and root canal therapy?

Root canals are the passages or chambers that run from the crown of a tooth all the way to the tip of its root. Each tooth typically has between one and four root canals composed of blood vessels, nerves, and other tissues, collectively known as pulp. Root canal therapy, on the other hand, is the endodontic procedure used to treat an infection within the root canals.

What causes root canal infections?

Tooth decay can damage the outer structure of the tooth, penetrating through the enamel and dentin into the dental pulp. In other cases, physical injuries can fracture the outer structure, not only causing tooth pain, but leading to infection.

Is root canal therapy really necessary — or will my infection go away on its own?

Yes, root canal therapy is necessary for patients dealing with infected tooth pulp. Only endodontic therapy will be able to truly treat the infection at its source and prevent it from spreading any further. Without treatment, you could even lose your tooth.

What happens if you cannot save my tooth?

Our number one priority will be to save your tooth. Even if that's not possible, though, you still have hope. As a comprehensive practice, we are able to take care of all your tooth replacement needs, including placing dental implants and a custom crown.
